Doctoral Student Consortium
The Doctoral Student Consortium is an engaging, interactive professional experience designed to help participants successfully launch their academic careers. The Consortium will take place on Wednesday, June 17th from 9:00 - 4:30. (There will be a continental breakfast served from 8:00 - 9:00 as well as lunch.) There will also be a special reception for all doctoral student consortium participants on the evening of June 16th from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM.
Who Should Attend
The Consortium welcomes doctoral students with interests in all of the Service Science and Management areas, including human resources, marketing, operations, engineering, technology and strategy). The program will focus on several areas that align with individuals who have completed, or about to complete their doctoral programs and are just beginning their academic careers. These areas include:
- career goals & job search issues
- research strategies and publishing
- teaching effectiveness
- achieving success in academia
The main reasons for attending this consortium include:
- Networking: getting a job, finding collaborators, and gaining advantages in the career you are about to enter are all related to "who you know." This is your chance to meet and get to know some of the leading researchers and educators in the service science and management field.
- Skills Development: excellent teaching and research require both practical skills and content knowledge. You will learn from both established scholars and recent graduates who will share their secrets to success.
- Advancing Your Research: the research incubator will provide you with an opportunity to engage in a discussion of your research ideas with your peers and with outstanding researchers in the area of service science and management as well as discuss issues and challenges that are unique to this area.
Application Process
Those wishing to attend the consortium should submit:
- A current curriculum vita.
- An extended abstract (3-5 pages) describing your current research area.
- A letter of recommendation from your department chair, or dissertation supervisor.
These materials should be sent to either of the coordinators listed below by April 30, 2009. As there is a limited amount of spaces available for students to attend this consortium, applications received after this date will be considered on a space-available basis.
Students accepted into the Doctoral Student Consortium will be admitted free of charge and will be permitted to participate in the Art & Science of Service V, which will take on the following two days at a reduced rate.
